This article profiles William F. Buckley Jr., an Irish American author and political activist. Buckley surely ranks as one of the most controversial, visionary and influential characters in the history of the American conservative movement. Many observers give Buckle credit for carrying the banner for the Republican party following World War II. He got his education at Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut, after short stints at the University of Mexico and the U.S. Army. He worked as a teacher and a covert agent In Mexico City, Mexico for the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency. He was responsible for the launching of the magazine National Review. Buckley focused primarily on writing novels and providing a boost for conservative politicians over the course of the following decades, writing dozens of books and throwing his weight behind Barry Goldwater, Richard Nixon and Ronald Reagan.
