This article presents the biography of the 15th U.S. President James Buchanan. He was born on April 23, 1791, near Mercersburg, Pennsylvania, the son of James and Elizabeth Speer Buchanan. He graduated from Dickinson College in 1809 and was admitted to the bar in 1812. He fought in the War of 1812 as a volunteer. He was twice elected to the Pennsylvania general assembly, and in 1821 he entered the U.S. House of Representatives. After briefly serving as minister to Russia, he was elected U.S. senator from Pennsylvania. As Folk's secretary of state, he ended the Oregon dispute with Britain and supported the Mexican War and annexation of Texas.
