This article features children's book author Gene Zion. He said he knew he was an artist when his kindergarten teacher praised one of his drawings. His first paid job was painting pictures on the back of his classmates' raincoats. Eventually this talent led to an art degree from Brooklyn's Pratt Institute in New York City. In 1936, he won a national travel poster contest. The prize was a trip to Europe. While there, he became interested in the design and printing of books after visiting printing plants. During World War II, he served in the army, designing training manuals and filmstrips. When the war was over, he worked in television and magazine art departments before working independently as a designer and art director.
