This article presents information on the performance of the stage play titled A Good American Novel, by Beth Lapides, performed at P.S. 122 in New York on November 30, 1984. Before the performance officially began, the audience's participation helped to shape Lapide's show. Along with programs, spectators were given ballots on which they were instructed to nominate three books for the Great American Novel. The winners would be announced by Lapides during her performance. Lapides casually strolled out and the lights dimmed. She wore a white suit, red shirt and socks and a blue tie. She carried a clipboard and flipping her long brown curls behind her, began constructing a story, Mad Lib style. The audience supplied Lapides with words for locations, foods, smells, emotions and so one and she filled in the blanks. The bulk of the story, about a woman's search for the meaning of life, had already been written by Lapides. When the audience's improvised information was inserted, parts of the story were hilariously cock-eyed, others, amazingly appropriate. Next, Lapides performed a song accompanied by a synthesizer and Lunatune, who appear above and behind her on the platform. Allowing the Lunatune to do most of the singing, Lapides danced free-form around the space, combining spins, twists and boogie steps.
