This article offers a look at the underground performing arts world in Lower Manhattan, New York City. The large artist population residing in SoHo and Tribeca has given rise to unpublicized performances in apartments, lofts, storefronts and nightclubs. Here underground does not mean secretive, rather it means indifferent. Like small town social gatherings, people attend the performances as much to see friends as to be entertained. The press is not invited and reviews are rare. Seventy-Five Warren Street has been the site of a great deal of activity in 1979. In May of 1979, a deal was struck between the landlord and an artist, Harry Spitz, that the space could be used for a short time in exchange for sanding the floor and painting the walls. Over the six evenings an assortment of readings, films, performances and music drifted in and out of 75 Warren. Composer/dramatist Jeffrey Lohn hosted several events at his loft in Grand Street in 1978. Over 100 people gathered there at a time, coming to see such diverse performances as Fatty Acid (by composers Warren Burt, David Dunn and Ron Robboy) or Tone Death, a composer specializing in high frequency sound.
