A study conducted by researchers at the Federal University of ABC-UFABC in Santo Andre, Brazil, explores the role of the cellular prion protein (PrPC) in oxidative and neurodegenerative processes. The study found that PrPC offers neuroprotection to astrocytes, a type of brain cell, in the presence of oxidative stressors. PrPC was shown to prevent protein aggregation and promote the degradation of toxic amyloid beta protein, as well as regulate metal homeostasis and prevent DNA damage. The findings suggest that PrPC plays a crucial role in maintaining the functionality of astrocytes and protecting neurons against oxidative stress. [Extracted from the article]
