The paper examines the history and nature of Russian colonialism. Since the beginning of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the imperial character of Russia’s aggression has not been universally understood, as indicated by the oft-expressed view that the war was caused by NATO expansion and the West’s disregard for Russian geopolitical interests. The first part of the paper provides a brief overview of Russian colonialism, particularly in relation to Ukraine. In the second part of the paper, the nature of Russian colonialism is examined by comparing it to the colonialism that was historically enacted by Western European empires. If Western European colonialism primarily employed the logic of Orientalizing or “othering” the conquered nations, Russian colonial ideology has, by contrast, insisted on creating uniformity between the colonized and the colonizer, particularly in relation to Ukrainians and Byelorussians. Russian imperialism is also characterized by a strong sense of exceptionalism, derived both from the belief in Russia’s messianic Christian mission to redeem the world as well as the Soviet Union’s position as the harbinger of international communist movements. Despite its purported might, Russian imperialism is also unique in how central the idea of colonization as an act of self-defense has been to its ideology. The paper concludes with the thesis that the phenomenon of colonialism cannot be understood without taking into account the ways how it has manifested itself throughout Russian history. By recognizing the neocolonial nature of Russia’s current aggression and taking a principled stance against it is the only possible way to move towards a genuine international anticolonial solidarity, rooted in universal values of justice and freedom as non-domination.
