A recent study conducted by researchers at Akershus University Hospital in Norway has found that negative tuberculin skin test (TST) responses after Bacillus Calmette-Guerin (BCG) vaccination are associated with a decreased long-term risk for developing amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). The study analyzed data from a Norwegian tuberculosis screening program conducted between 1963 and 1975, and found that individuals who remained TST negative had a lower risk of developing ALS compared to those who mounted a positive TST response. The findings suggest that adaptive immunity plays a primary role in the development of ALS. Further research is needed to better understand the relationship between T cell immune responses and ALS risk. [Extracted from the article]
