Vuong, Ocean. In his interview with Allardice, Vuong stated that he felt that Time Is a Mother was the book he was proudest of, the one he felt was most complete, acknowledging that no book ever fully realizes the writer's ambitions. Vuong believed that her death from cancer at age fifty-one was caused by her exposure to chemicals in this work setting, but the nail salon was also the source of Vuong's name.
