THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING EARNEST (BRISTOL OLD VIC) THIS show earns a fourth star by dint of being cheeky. Its main joke -- to present Wilde's comedy with a fantastically camp, all-male cast -- wears thin at times, but what the heck. Let's give director David Fielding a cheer for such an outrageous new take. This lot make Graham Norton look as square as a newsreader in communist Bulgaria. There are pink drawing rooms, a graphic of Oscar on the ceiling, exaggerated wipes of the brow, choreographed cigarette scenes, and a Miss Prism (Daniel Hill) with a chin like Desperate Dan and a whip in her hand. Lady Bracknell, played with a stately totter by Michael Fitzgerald, is a warted, baritone-husky ringer for the late Stratford Johns. If she seems exhausted at moments, it is perhaps because she has to walk about in a corset as clunky as the shell of a Galapagos turtle. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]
