Drawing on microeconomic and sociological theories, and taking into account migrant's experience at the place of destination, this study examines migrants' post-move life satisfaction in Vietnam. Specifically, using the 1997 Vietnam Migration and Health Survey (VNMH97) data, I assess the roles of economic opportunities, social network, and migration experience in destination in shaping migrants' life satisfaction in post-move, and determine whether the effect on life satisfaction operates differently for temporary migrants and permanent migrants. Findings provide evidence to support the argument that neoclassic microeconomic model, new household economic model, social network model, and migrants' post-move experience are related to migrants' life satisfaction in receiving society. First, in the pooled model, moving for perceived opportunities, disaster in sending areas prior to move, network contacts before and during the process of move, and single move are all positively associated with the outcome variable. Secondly, the effect on life satisfaction varies across migration status: (1) post-move experience is related only to temporary migrants; (2) moving with family members is a significant predictor only for permanent movers; (3) migration decision making yields opposite effect on the outcome variable for permanent and temporary migrants: it decreases life satisfaction for permanent movers, but increases it for temporary migrants. However, none of these theoretical approaches is fully supported. This may suggest that a single model alone can hardly explain migrants' subjective evaluation of life in destination. Rather, they work together to shape migrants' satisfaction with life. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
