Lydia Bongiovanni (1914- 1998) and Elda Franco (1924- 2013) were two sportswomen from Turin who enjoyed a very successful career under the fascist regime, which supported and was very mush interested in the development of women’s sport for eugenic purposes. During World War II, however, they both joined the Italian Resistance in their hometown. The essay retraces the first part of Lydia Bongiovanni’s life and career. Lydia, the younger sister of mathematician Emilia, was introduced to sport at the Società Ginnastica Torinese (SGT), where Andreina Sacco was still a dominant figure. She then went on to win her first medals, especially in jumps and relay, along with other SGT fellow athletes (Giovanna Virengo, Margherita Scolari, Ellen Capozzi, Vittorina Vivenza), before leaving SGT and joining GUF Torino. In September 1933, Lydia won two gold medals at the International University Games held in Turin. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
