Current research analyzes students' performance in the discipline Financial and Budget Administration, Course of Administration, at the Federal University of Alagoas, Brazil, taking into account the specific characteristics of the teaching-learning process in higher education. Descriptive research with secondary data on scores and absences during the 2015-2019 period was undertaken by the discipline's class sheets. Statistical inferences were done by Pearson's correlation, linear regression and Student's t tests (p<0.05). Highest means occurred in the second part of the discipline, namely, 6.69 and 6.73 for the day and evening shifts, respectively, without any significant difference. Failure occurred in the two disciplines due to students' quittance. The second semester of 2019 had the highest number of failures (85.37%) whereas the lowest rate (8%) occurred in the second semester of 2017. Results show that there is deficiency in students' performance and in such factors as motivation. Previous contact with themes related to the discipline, didactics and methods affect performance. In other words, continuous efforts are necessary for a context in which undergraduates become participants in the process concerned. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
