The broad Flemish peace movement which gained strength during the Cold War, included a wide range of organizations, with distinct characteristics. A microstudy of these organizations might reveal significant insights into the nature of this phenomenon. The Internationale van Oorlogstegenstanders (IOT) was one of the most important parts of the Flemish peace movement in the last three decades of the 20th century. IOT emerged in 1965 as the local branch of the War Resisters' International (WRI), championing the interests of the conscientious objectors, i.e. individuals who made a stand against conscription. It did not take long for it to present itself as a pluralistic organization, actively promoting strong pacifist views and a comprehensive peace concept of its own. The author conducted a content and institutional analysis of the IOT peace movement, while adopting a chronological approach. His article shows how IOT managed to link public protest against political decision-making regarding security policy to its strong pacifist views. IOT clung stubbornly to these views and by doing so it succeeded in securing a prominent position in the Flemish peace movement. Hence, in the late 1970s, it became one of the co-founders of the umbrella peace organizations Overlegcentrum voor de Vrede (OCV) and the Vlaams Aktiekomitee tegen Atoomwapens (VAKA).
