The Srebrenica genocide was one of the most terrible war crimes in Europe since 1945 and has become a symbol of the brutality of the Yugoslav Wars. The massacre had a huge impact on Germany, reminding the country not to forget the traumatic events of its own past and--if possible--to prevent human rights abuses elsewhere. German handling of military conflicts outside the North Atlantic area has been a controversial issue since the reunification of the country. Bonn had to face the dilemma, what should be done with the Bundeswehr and how German foreign policy could fit into the new international community. The political party Bündnis 90/Die Grünen particularly suffered from a crisis under the pressure of representing a position in the issue of the war in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The aim of this study is to introduce the transformation of Green political views about the question of the Bundeswehr's military operations in the Balkans during the 1990s. The paper also analyses the various arguments of factions within the party, focusing on Joschka Fischer's role as a catalyst. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
