A hundred years ago, Allied leaders and diplomats signed the peace treaties of Versailles and later of Locarno, in an attempt to end the era of the First World War. It was a time of nationalist fervour. But of internationalist and pacifist views as well, as the League of Nations was founded in 1919. Although Freemasonry may certainly be regarded as a cosmopolitan and internationalist society, it found itself confronted by the rise of nationalist views from the end of the 18th century onwards. In addition, one hundred years later, Belgian Freemasons were facing regionalist beliefs espoused by the Flemish and the Walloon Movement. The First World War exacerlated nationalist feelings within the masonic temples. This is why And the largest Belgian masonic organisation, the Grand Orient of Belgium sanctioned members whose behaviour was deemed 'unpatriotic' during that war. Analysis of the arguments which are related to this issue, not only provides a profound insight into the seemingly conflicting identities within the masonic movement, but into Belgian society in the aftermath of the war as well.
