The author uses family archives he later gave to the city of Haybes to relate the life of his greatgrandmother, Marie-Louise Dromart (1880-1937), a French poetess who had a success during the period between the First and the Second World Wars. As a nurse and vice-president of the local Red Cross during World War I, she personally witnessed the German invasion in August 1914 since her village was the first one in France to be marched on. She worked with doctors such as Georges Bourgeois or Jules Séjournet in the hospitals of Haybes and Fumay under German orders until August 1915, and then played an important role as a wartime godmother. For her courage during the destruction of her village and the massacre of a part of the population, she was awarded a special-unit citation (Ordre de la Nation) and the Legion of Honor for acting at the risk of her own life. After WWl, she resumed her activity as a poet and had an abundant correspondence with many artists, writers and poets. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
[ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
