After the Belgian Revolution and the withdrawal of the southern part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in 1830, in both Belgium and the Netherlands a need arose tor national heroes to strengthen the sense of solidarity within the boundaries of the new nation states. In the Netherlands part, these heroes were mainly sought in the period from 1560 to 1660. Among the composers the focus was from the start concentrated on Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck (1562-1621). The fact that musicians from the Low Countries had played a prominent role on the European music scene in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries was generally seen as interesting; but there was little interest for the music itself because it was considered primitive. This gradually changed with the publication of the Collectio operum musicorum Batavorum saeculi XVI (first series of 8 volumes 1844-1849, second series of 4 volumes 1855-1859 and 8 volumes in manuscript that were never printed). It was a project of Franz Commer (1813-1887) in which his transcriptions of old Dutch masters were published by the Maatschappij tot Bevordering der Toonkunst (MBT). There was a discussion about the question to what extent the presented works were from composers from the northern part of the Netherlands, but as no certainty could be provided, they agreed that this remained undecided. From the 1860s, the MBT also showed interest in the original sources with regard to music history in the northern Netherlands. This culminated in the establishment - as a daughter of the MBT - of the Vereniging voor Nederlandse Muziekgeschiedenis (The Society for Music History of the Netherlands; VNM).64 The association collected musical documents from the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, and, in collaboration with the MBT, published part of these musical works in modern transcriptions. Here, too, in the early decades they concentrated on the work of Sweelinck. At first, the collection of the (K)VNM was housed in the MBT library, but from 1881 onwards the oldest part was transferred, on loan, to the University Library (UB) of Amsterdam. At the end of the 1930s there were plans to bring the collection to Utrecht - in support of the professorial chair, set up at the Utrecht University by the MBT - but ultimately this idea was abandoned. After the establishment of the 'Stichting Toonkunst-Bibliotheek' (STB) in 1955, the loan treaty with the UB Amsterdam was canceled, so that the collection could be reunited with the other parts of its original collection in the library of the STB on the Eerste Jacob van Campenstraat in Amsterdam. When the subsidies from the government for the STB were stopped in 2007, the collection was once again given on loan to the UB Amsterdam, where the collection has arrived in a safe haven and hopefully can survive future perils without damage.
