A biography of Surgeon Mate John Frederick Heileman is presented. He was born in Clausthal, German in 1753, served in the Lieb Company as field surgeon of the German Corps allied with the British, was a prisoner of war in August 1777 in Pennsylvania, Americanized his name and was commissioned as Garrison Surgeon's Mate in June 1802. Heileman was transferred to Fort Mifflin in Philadelphia, was appointed as Post Surgeon in 1815 and died on October 9, 1816.
