The article focuses on the sufferings of Jewish immigrants in the U.S. in transit through Germany. Jewish immigrants from Russia, before World War I, suffered many hardships as a result of German restrictions imposed on trans-emigrants through Germany. The restrictions were closely connected with the policy of German government to help the German shipping companies in their competition with British, French, Dutch and other foreign companies. Pool rates and natural conditions such as location and price of passage were also the problems of several Jewish immigrants.
