This article reviews the second edition of Dunja Melcic, editor, “Der Jugoslawien-Krieg, Handbuch zu Vorgeschichte, Verlauf und Konsequenzen” (The Yugoslav war: handbook for antecedents, course, and consequences), published in 2007. The “antecedents” are treated in fourteen articles on the origins of the nations included in Yugoslavia in the 19th century but especially their development within the federation after World War I. The conflicts engendered during World War II were followed by the postwar federation alternating between repression of ethnic nationalities and the acknowledgment of their dynamic awakening. The contradictions inherent in the political system led to disastrous consequences in the genocidal civil wars of the 1990s and the disintegration of Yugoslavia, articles about all of which from diverse social and political viewpoints are included in the volume.
