The author discusses the return of Japanese language to the Bonin Islands off of Japan in the postreversion period. The Bonin Islands were returned to Japan in 1968 after being taken over by the United States Navy after World War II (WWII). Since then, very little English has been spoken and children on the island are monolingual in Japanese. The author says it won't be long before anyone in the community can speak or understand Bonin English and Ogasawara Mixed Language (OML) anymore. Many islanders and Westerners regret the loss of English because they know how important it would be for their children in the twenty-first century. The loss of English also represents a loss of their heritage and identity, states the author.
