The Korean War, fought from 1950-1953, was a conflict that presented unique challenges due to the mountainous terrain of the Korean peninsula. The narrow valleys and high peaks limited the use of large-armoured columns and made it difficult for artillery and air forces to maneuver effectively. The North Korean and Chinese forces adapted their tactics to the terrain, relying on infantry, machine guns, and nighttime attacks. The US ground forces faced the challenge of using outdated equipment from World War II in the rough terrain. The M1 Garand rifle and the BAR 1918A2 proved to be reliable weapons, while the M2 Carbine had issues with sensitivity to dust and ice. The introduction of recoilless rifles provided the infantry with the ability to directly attack fortified positions. The air war saw the emergence of jet-driven aircraft, with the MiG-15 initially dominating the skies. However, the skill and training of the pilots played a crucial role in the outcome of aerial battles. Helicopters also played a significant role in the war, particularly in the evacuation of wounded soldiers. Overall, the Korean War was fought under unique conditions and required adaptations to the challenging terrain. [Extracted from the article]
