In Chapter 33 of the second Book of Gregory the Great’s Dialogues, Scholastica and Benedict spend a day together in conversation. As night begins to fall, Scholastica begs him to stay at the house where they are meeting. At the refusal of her brother, who is unable to remain outside the monastery according to the dictates of the Rule, Scholastica begins to cry and pray. As if to reflect her tears, a torrential rain begins to fall and prevents Benedict from returning to his monastery. At the end of the episode, Gregory notes: «Scholastica was able to do more (plus potuit), because she loved more (quae amplius amavit)». Likewise, in the episode of the Pharisee and the sinner narrated in the Gospel of Luke (7:36-50) and in opposition to ascetic legalism, love is presented as the key that unlocks the treasure of divine mercy. Love is incarnated in Scholastica. She was educated in faith, prayer and charity at the divine schola, where she learned the wisdom of the heart and the love of God. The meeting between Benedict and Scholastica plays a central role in the narrative. It marks not only the end of Benedict’s miracles of action, but also his entrance into the final phase of life, in which his visions and conversations are well attested. Fuelled by prayer and contemplation, the heart perceives the radiance of creation, and the nature of the transformed heart, an «interior light within the mind» (lumen mentis), shines with God’s glory. This is what happened to Benedict. Flanked by Scholastica, Benedict continues to shine on earth through his Rule: he is the light of Europe. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
L’amore è incarnato in Scolastica. È quanto accaduto a Benedetto. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
