The article presents research findings on pigments identified in the works of Helene Schjerfbeck (1878– 1945). A total of 96 oil and tempera paintings by Schjerfbeck were studied using complementary examination and analytical techniques such as stereomicroscopic examination with visible and UV light, polarized light microscopy (PLM) and energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (EDXRF). The majority of the identified pigments are synthetic inorganic pigments: cobalt blue, synthetic ultramarine, Prussian blue, cerulean blue, emerald green, viridian, chrome yellow, cadmium yellow, Naples yellow, strontium yellow, vermilion, cadmium red, iron oxides, lead white, zinc white, bone black, and carbon black. Malachite was the only natural inorganic pigment identified. Schjerfbeck also used Indian yellow, a rare synthetic organic pigment, in six of her paintings. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
