This year marks the 50 th anniversary of the Yom Kippur War (October 6-25, 1973), when Israel was attacked unexpectedly by Egyptian and Syrian forces on a religious holiday. The Yom Kippur War represented a test of Romanian diplomacy, given that Romania was the only country from the communist bloc that never interrupted relations with Israel after the Six-Day War of 1967, and had managed to normalize its situation with the Arab countries. The reasons for Ceausescu's involvement in ending the conflict in the Middle East and in the peace process were diverse and aimed at economic and financial advantages and winning the most favoured nation clause from the Americans. Using the diplomatic strategy very skilfully, Ceausescu's Romania kept an equidistant and pacifist attitude from the beginning, considering that the best way to end the conflict is the political one, through negotiation and compliance with the UN resolutions of October 1967 and the cessation of the fire of October 1973. Bucharest offered a safe and professional channel of negotiation and connection, succeeding to a large extent in harmonizing all the grievances and claims of the two rival parties. Historic meetings were held with personalities of political life in Israel and Arab countries, honest and objective discussions were held about the evolution of the peace process. Ceausescu's involvement in the peace process went on until the signing of the double treaty at Camp David in September 1978. His merits as a mediator in this process were recognized and appreciated by both sides, including the American government. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
