A recent study conducted by researchers at New York University (NYU) Langone Health examined the correlation between ionized magnesium (iMg) and total blood magnesium (tMg) in pediatric patients following kidney transplant. The study found that iMg and tMg showed strong category agreement and correlation, indicating that tMg can be used as a surrogate marker for iMg. However, the study also found that ionized calcium (iCa) may not accurately reflect iMg levels. The researchers concluded that further investigation is needed to determine the effect of magnesium supplementation and the appropriate concentration for clinical supplementation.
