On a hospital ward many factors related to the hospital environment like nursing interventions, sounds, light, temperature and uncomfortable bed can disturb the patients' sleep. While hospitalized, promoting patients' sleep is important for their health, well-being and recovery. This study was a part of a larger research in which a sleep promoting protocol was developed. The aim of this study was to describe patients' experiences of how nurses had supported their sleep after a new sleep promoting protocol was implemented on the wards. The data was collected by interviewing a total of 104 patients from four wards of one central hospital in Finland in spring 2018. The data collection was made three months after the implementation of the sleep promoting protocol. The data was analyzed by deductive content analysis. From the patients' perspective nursing interventions promoting their sleep focused on treating physical symptoms and arranging a good sleeping environment. The patients mentioned less support related to emotional well-being and did not necessarily tell the nurses they needed support. Patients' sleep in hospital can be promoted by many nursing interventions. This requires nurses' knowledge on sleep promotion and that they consider sleep promotion important. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
Vuodeosastolla potilaan unta voivat häiritä erilaiset sairaalaympäristöstä johtuvat tekijät kuten hoitotoimenpiteet, osaston äänet, valaistus, lämpötila sekä vuoteen epämukavuus. Potilaiden unen tukeminen on tärkeä osa potilaiden terveyden, hyvinvoinnin ja toipumisen edistämistä vuodeosastohoidon aikana. Tutkimus on osa laajempaa hanketta, jossa kehitettiin vuodeosastoille potilaiden unen tukemisen toimintamalli. Potilaat toivat niukasti esille tunnetiloihin ja psyykkiseen hyvinvointiin liittyviä asioita, eivätkä he myöskään aina olleet maininneet hoitajille näihin liittyvästä tuen tarpeesta. Hoitotyön keinoin voidaan tukea potilaiden nukkumista vuodeosastolla. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
