Summary: After the discussions about the independence of psychoanalysis from medicine in the second half of the 1920s and the question, dominating the following decades, whether and which science it was, as well as the provocations by Eysenck, which had a lasting impact on psychotherapy research, the psychotherapy scene in German-speaking countries was once again in upheaval in the 1970s and 1980s. On the basis of the school explosion in those two decades, the emergence of school-independent interest groups in the 1980s and the regulation initiatives at the end of the 1980s and in the 1990s, the path to the Swiss Charter, to the Austrian as well as to the German Psychotherapy/Psychotherapists Act is outlined. The historical review also focuses on the effects or interactions of regulation with the psychotherapeutic research and training landscape over the past 30 years, especially with regard to the dominant dispute between the scientific, efficacy-oriented understanding of a scientific psychotherapy under the flag of psychology and the ideographic-hermeneutic understanding of an independent scientific psychotherapy. The article concludes with a concise description of the status quo as a result of this negotiation process, which led to very different results in Austria compared to Germany. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
