The present study examines the phonetic realization of the German particles "ja" and "naja". Numerous instances were identified where "ja" was transcribed orthographically as "ja", but phonetically realized as "[nja]". Based on phonetic and functional parameters, it was investigated whether these instances can be assigned to the lexeme "ja" or "naja". The results suggest that "[nja]" was predominantly meant as "ja", although some functional differences between "ja" and "[nja]" were also observed. Further phonetic extensions of "ja" were also identified, such as "nja". However, the use of "nja" as a modal particle does not occur. Differences in pragmatic function and position within the turn were observed, with "nja" primarily used as a responsive or listener signal, while "naja" functioned more as a hesitation signal or discourse marker. The authors conclude from their findings that "nja" is an independent form. The use of "ja" in spontaneous German speech strongly depends on individual speech habits and the specific conversational context. It is presumed that the use of "ja" is influenced by both situational and functional factors. Further investigations are suggested to examine the phenomenon more closely. [Extracted from the article]
This paper presents observations on the phonetic realisations of the German particles ja – 'yes' and naja – approximately 'well'. As part of a large-scale study on the particle ja, we identified numerous instances in the dataset that had been orthographically transcribed as ja, but were phonetically realised as [nja]. Using phonetic and functional parameters, we explore the question whether these instances can be attributed to either the lexeme ja or naja. While phonetic measurements yield ambivalent results, analyses of pragmatic parameters such as function and turn position seem to indicate that [nja] was predominantly intended to be ja, although some functional differences between ja and [nja] could also be identified.
