The paper examines the extent to which the fascination for ruins as elements of the historic landscape stimulated, between the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, programs of protection and preservation. Reflections focus on documents, some as yet unpublished, illustrating studies of architectural artefacts in a state of ruin and archaeological finds, all part of a theoretical Tour of Italy undertaken, for various reasons and in different periods, by two figures of note in any discussion of restoration. The first is Charles Buls, whose handwritten notebooks describe his explorations of Italy in 1902-1909. Filled with written observations, sketches and photographic evidence of everything from landscapes to details of materials, his studies of the enduring ties between ruins and their surrounding environments appear to have influenced his theories on ‘live’ and ‘dead’ monuments, also contributing to expanding the scope of restoration from the architectural to the urban dimension, and from there to man’s influence on the landscape, as shown by the Burgomaster’s active role in the Société Nationale pour la protection des sites et des monuments en Belgique. An exploration of the cultural legacy of Alfredo d’Andrade follows, analysing his drawings and photographic materials, in particular those tied to a 1996 trip to southern Italy, studies that need to be cross-analysed with the initiatives of learning and interpretation that he also promoted as director of the Regional Office for the Preservation of Monuments. In transposing this philological evidence to a contemporary framework, determining to what extent the perceptions of an erudite coterie of experts influenced the meaning of memory and the preservation of the ruins, the current state of the sites is also outlined from a critical perspective that includes processes of economic utilisation. Moving between past and present, the essay combines an analysis of material structures with the cultural perception of the landscape and the attendant influence, both yesterday and today, of social factors.
