The article discusses Indonesian companies' neglect of minority shareholders' interest. It informs that they started objecting to this neglect. They kicked up enough fuss for clove-cigarette maker HM Sampoerna to abort its plans to buy car maker Astra International which they felt the price was too high. It further adds that they forced the Lippo group to amend a restructuring plan to sell assets to its publicly traded companies (Lippo lowered the price of the assets and eliminated a management fee); and in a restructuring for Jakarta International Hotels & Development (JIHD), gave the principals reason to strike a good deal for all the shareholders, not just the insiders. In order to diversify its revenue stream, Indonesian real estate company JIHD purchased an interest in a telecommunications group whose main asset is a 45% stake in Satelit Palapa Indonesia. But the significant shareholders of JIHD had to tread carefully in order not to upset minority shareholders and securities regulators.
