The German and Spanish literature have been linked together in an important way through the literature of the German novelist Thomas Mann, by his philosophical novel The Magic Mountain and his essay Voyage with Don Quixote. In this study we want to transmit the idea that literature is global, there is no difference based on the language used, the origin of the author or the period a piece is written. We want to highlight the important role played by the translator in universalising literature. The essay Voyage with Don Quixote brings closer the Spanish world with that of the Nobelist and it is brought with additional analysis on the author Cervantes, his archetype characters, his literature influences as well as other subjects such as Europe in the brink of war. We will look closely at the two translations of the novel The Magic Mountain in Spanish, focusing on the transformation that the literary text has on the first translation for non-literary reasons. The second translation of The Magic Mountain in Spanish, seventy years after the first, gave to the Spanish reader the opportunity to enjoy reading a book considered dark, up until that point privilege of Spanish intellectual elites with knowledge of the German culture61.
