In marital therapies, routinely monitoring change processes by a systematic case study format is highly unusual. The present study illustrates how such changes can be tracked by session-by-session ratings, using simple monitor instruments. Generally, marital therapy targets three processes of change: romantic partners are encouraged to (1) challenge their dysfunctional perceptions of each other, (2) to disrupt repetitive negative interaction cycles and (3) to invest in more functional and rewarding interactions. The present case study explored treatment changes within each spouse over the course of a marital therapy. Both of them were raised in deprived families of origin settings and were insecurely attached. The therapy covered 25 sessions. Four monitor instruments were used. Both spouses filled out two Dialogical Feedback Tools (DFT) at the end of each session. After each session, the therapist assessed each spouse's latent communicative messages in terms of dominance and affiliation with the Interpersonal Grid (iG).The Brief Impact Message Inventory-Circumplex (iMI-C) was filled out at three (the patients) and two (the therapist) points in time over the course of treatment. Partial evidence was obtained for achieving the three treatment targets. Among others, at the end of treatment, both romantic partners rated each other as more affiliative with the IMI-C. This was consistent with the view of the therapist, who rated each of the partners. From both perspectives (the other partner and the therapist) the female patient - starting therapy as quite dominant - was rated with the IMI-C as far less dominant at termination, whereas the very submissive male partner, was rated by the female partner - but not by the therapist - as less submissive at the end of treatment. On one of both DFT's the following statistically significant trend was found: compared to the first part of therapy, in the second part both spouses became more positively focused on each other than on the therapist. No linear change processes were found on the IG and the other DFT. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
[ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
