The monograph presents the church-political, territorial, and pastoral dimensions of the Archdiocese of Gorizia in Carniola in the period of the apostolic vicar and first Archbishop of Gorizia Karel Mihael Count Attems. It portrays the synchronised operation of the Archbishop and the Viennese court headed by the Empress Maria Theresa, how they handled the situation at hand, especially regarding pastoral care which was under great strain due to the several- century-long ban prohibiting the patriarchs of Aquileia from entering the territory of the Empire. Archbishop Attems also abided by the Pope's wish and travelled across the multilingual, vast, and economically fairly poor archdiocese several times in person or had his representatives do it to perform detailed visitations which enabled him an insight into the current situation in parishes under his dominion. After the Venetian occupation of the major part of Friuli in 1420, the Habsburgs lost their influence on the appointment of the patriarch of Aquileia forever. As Venetian subjects, the patriarchs of Aquileia were practically not allowed to enter the territory of the diocese under imperial rule for the next three centuries. The religious and ecclesiastical situation also worsened due to the absence of the chancellor which was especially obvious in the time of Protestantism. From the 15th century on, the land princes strived to establish a diocese in Gorizia for the territory under the imperial rule as a kind of counterweight, but its establishment was constantly hindered by various circumstances. Almost through the entire 17th and the first half of the 18th centuries, diocesan duties were, under the »order« of the nuncio of Vienna, performed by bishops of the neighbouring dioceses from the Austrian territory; an important role was also played by archdeacons. The credit for the establishment of the Diocese of Gorizia goes to the priest Vid Gullini, who in 1686 left in his will about 40,000 guldens of his wealth for the new diocese seated in Gorizia. Thus he provided its material resources. The right moment for the establishment of a »partial« diocese arrived only after the beginning of the rule of Maria Theresa. The first attempt in 1742 fell through due to the proposal concerning how to appoint the apostolic vicar, while the second attempt in November 1747 was successful. Maria Theresa proposed to the Pope that he appoint the Basel cathedral canon Karel Mihael Count Attems as the apostolic vicar. Venice, naturally, opposed any changes in the Patriarchate and successfully obstructed the process of the establishment of the apostolic vicariate as well as the appointment of the first apostolic vicar until November 29th 1749, when Pope Benedict XIV issued the papal brief Omnium Ecclesiarum solicitudinem and thus established the apostolic vicariate in Gorizia, while naming Karel Mihael Count Attems the apostolic vicar with the status of titular bishop and the rights of the residential bishop all in one person on June 27th 1750. Following several months of tension between the Serenissima and Rome, the Republic of St Mark reached an agreement with Vienna after short negotiations and on the basis of which the Pope issued a bull Iniuncta nobis on July 6th 1751 which abolished the Patriarchate of Aquileia and established two archdioceses, one in Gorizia and another one in Udine. The church and administrative structure of the Archdiocese of Gorizia was defined by the bull Sacrosanctae Militantis Ecclesiae, issued on April 18th 1752. Attems took over the estate of the Archdiocese of Gorizia on July 30th 1752. Karel Mihael Count Attems was born in Gorizia in 1711. He gained a solid education attending various institutions. He concluded his studies in 1735 in Rome with a PhD in Roman and Canon Law. Here he acquired excellent connections and the favour of many influential people close to the Roman Curia, which he benefited from in the following years. Prior to his appointment as apostolic vicar he occupied important posts at the church institutions of Central Europe. During his time in Vienna he became acquainted with the future empress and a bond was formed between them which ensured that he enjoyed the favour of Maria Theresa until the day he died. A favourable moment for him came with the establishment of the apostolic vicariate in Gorizia, when he was appointed apostolic vicar in June 1750. He was ordained as a bishop on August 24th 1750 in Ljubljana, and the apostolic vicariate started operating on September 1st 1750. On July 6th 1751, the Patriarchate of Aquileia was abolished and Attems was named the first archbishop of Gorizia; he was inaugurated on July 30th 1752. At the same time, he became the metropolitan bishop to the bishops of Trieste, Pićan, Como, and Trent. Archbishop Attems travelled through his entire archdiocese several times during his rule and was thus well acquainted with the situation under his eye. During his visits to individual parishes he performed pastoral inspections of parishes and their clergy, paying close attention to ceremonies, he encouraged priests as well as believers. Like other European bishops, Attems was also well aware that without adequately educated clergy he would not be able to enforce the necessary reforms; accordingly, in the spirit of the Council of Trent, he strived to found a theological seminary (1757), and in the following years he successfully rejected the attempt of the Viennese court to unite the Archdiocese of Gorizia with the Diocese of Ljubljana into a personal union. His most bitter experience with the court in Vienna came in 1768, when Attems organised a synod in Gorizia with which he wanted to bring order to pastoral care and discipline in his archdiocese. Despite numerous attempts he was unable to publish the synodal decisions due to the opposition of the censorship in Vienna and restraints from Rome, which devastated him deeply. At the end of the 1760s, Attems' health started giving in due to the abundance of work and the size of his archdiocese, so he asked the court to appoint him an auxiliary bishop. On November 11th 1769, the Pope appointed the cathedral dean Rudolf Jožef Count Edling as his auxiliary bishop who took over Attems' pastoral visits of the archdiocese, while Attems continued to perform all other tasks himself. Karel Mihael Count Attems died on February 18th 1774, and was laid to rest in the chapel of the theological seminary in Gorizia. With the abolition of the Patriarchate of Aquileia the problem of church control of the Habsburgs over the territory between the Drava and the state border with the Republic of Venice, which had existed since 1420, was finally solved. The Archdiocese and ecclesiastical province of Gorizia became, considering its range, one of the biggest in Europe of its time. It included about 600,000 believers, three quarters of whom spoke Slovenian, it incorporated 248 parishes and 152 vicariates divided into 15 archdiaconates. The latter were formed in the time of the Patriarchate and played an important role in this territory due to the Patriarch's distance. Archdiaconates did not have full episcopal jurisdiction, but a sort of a jurisdiction of the general vicar on the level of the archdiaconate. By the end of the 17th century eight archdiaconates had been formed in the territory of Carniola: the archdiaconates of Bistra, Gorenjska, Kostanjevica, Novo mesto, also called of Dolenjska, Ribnica, Stična, Metlika, and Vipava, the last two bearing the name commissariat or deanery. Parishes of the Archdiocese of Gorizia varied by size as well as the number of believers. In general, they were too vast for efficient pastoral care and this fact did not escape Bishop Attems. He strived for the establishment of new vicariates and subsidiary parishes which would be another way of bringing the Church closer to its believers. In his attempts to do so he frequently stumbled upon the problem of the rights of patronage, since patrons of individual parishes or benefices had the right to propose candidates for a vacant position in the patronage church or benefice. In Carniola, the strongest patrons were ecclesiastic institutions (Stična Abbey, the Collegiate chapter in Novo mesto, Kostanjevica Abbey, Bistra Carthusian Monastery, Velesovo Monastery, the Teutonic Order and Sovereign Military Order of Malta with the parish of Komenda), followed by the land prince, Princes of Auersperg, several families of barons and counts (Apfaltrer, Gallenberg etc.) and others. Archbishop Attems frequently bypassed the rights of patrons when establishing new pastoral outposts and put the wishes of believers first. Patrons often disagreed with that and would not allow for such unilateral interventions into their rights. Nevertheless, the archbishop substantiated the establishment of new parishes and vicariates with the fact that the existing parishes were too big, believers had difficulty reaching the parish church, and parishes which belonged to various dioceses were territorially intertwined. In Carniola, Archbishop Attems established around 15 new vicariates, and many more attempts fell through. Many of the new institutions were unable to take off for a long time due to financing problems and so some became properly active only with the Josephine reforms in 1787. The size of parishes was reflected in their scope and the number of inhabitants. Town and market town parishes were usually territorially unified, while numerous countryside parishes were divided into several »islands« (e.g. Šenčur near Kranj with the village of Huje). Just the opposite was true for the number of priests. Generally, there were more priests working in towns and market towns than in villages because the first were richer, with more benefices, and could thus support a bigger number of priests. On average, three priests worked in every parish: a parish priest, a vicar, and an assistant priest, occasionally also a castle priest but he was seldom part of the pastoral work in the parish. In general, life was no different in parishes and vicariates, some peculiarities were present only in those parishes which included monasteries (masses were more frequent, preaching, folk devotion). Priests and vicars were at the same time also state officials. In 1754, they had to carry out the first official census, they had to declare and enforce state and church decrees, pay ordinary and extraordinary taxes etc. Care for religious life was the duty and responsibility of every individual, priest or layman. The everyday life of believers was linked to the weather, natural disasters, fires, drought, disputes between individuals etc. Since the state treasury was constantly empty due to considerable needs and the Church property was tempting, in the second half of the 18th century the Church and believers started to feel that the state was financially weighing heavily on them. Parishes in Carniola were not equally developed and were thus taxed differently. The region of Gorenjska was in a much better position than the regions of Dolenjska and Notranjska. The parishes in Dolenjska and Notranjska were smaller and poorer, more exposed to various climatic events which additionally devastated the already povertystricken population. Another problematic issue was the charging of the stole fee because almost every parish charged the amount they wanted. Believers faced the pressure put on them by the state and other parties (seigneuries, patrons) with even more intense religious life and parties (dances, games), despite the fact that the Church was not favourably inclined towards certain forms of folk entertainment and made sure this area of life was also regulated in detail by various decrees. Believers attended various liturgical ceremonies, they especially favoured pilgrimages and (night) processions. An important role in religious life was bestowed upon the so-called devout institutes which were meant to ensure that the souls of the living and the deceased rested in peace and were well-provided for in the afterlife. Brotherhoods also held an important place in the religious life of the time, despite the fact that they were beginning to see their decline. The number of priests was relatively stable in the middle of the 18th century. Based on the research carried out so far, 982 priests were identified in the territory of Carniola under the rule of the Archdiocese of Gorizia in the discussed timeframe. The majority were born in the Patriarchate of Aquileia and generally came from 17 European dioceses. They were born in 144 parishes, the greatest number in the parishes of Ljubljana (Šempeter) and Novo mesto within the Diocese of Ljubljana, and slightly less in the parishes of Vipava and Stara Loka. A little less than eight percent of all known priests were born prior to 1701, while the remaining 92% were born in the 18th century. Upon the establishment of the Archdiocese of Gorizia in 1752, 419 were more than 25 years old. In Attems' period, older priests were fairly successfully substituted by younger ones since the inflow of youth was rather favourable. Upon consecration, candidates for the priesthood had to exhibit a certain degree of education; Archbishop Attems placed a lot of attention on education. Priests of the Archdiocese of Gorizia acquired their knowledge at 20 different educational institutions in Europe. The leading among them in number are the Ljubljana and Graz Jesuit Colleges, also important were schools in Gorizia and Vienna. During their studies priests acquired different academic degrees. The number of doctorates, master's, and bachelor's degrees was low, while their basic theological education was quite strong. Before they took over their positions, clerical candidates had to be ordained and the place of their ordination is known for two thirds of the discussed clergy-the celebrations were held at 31 different places. The majority were ordained in Udine or Gorizia, among other places Ljubljana takes the lead. The means for their maintenance (the so-called titulus mensae) were mostly provided by their relatives or their seigneury, nevertheless, monasteries, towns, market towns, noble families, and servants can also be found among the donors. The vacated pastoral post could be occupied based on responding to the call for applications, while the recommendation of acquaintances was also an important reference. When they got the job, priests were in charge of the wellbeing of the souls of their believers. They had to give regular masses at fixed hours, administer sacraments, listen to confessions, preach, teach Sunday school etc. The majority of priests did their jobs adequately, nevertheless, there were »those« who did their duties, intentionally or unintentionally, in a different way than stipulated, some due to age or lack of language skills, others due to carelessness or other interests. Naturally, there were those who stood out by displaying exactly the opposite characteristics: they were innovative and especially diligent in pastoral care (e.g. Peter Pavel Glavar). However, priests were not the only ones breaking the norms; so were the believers. For this reason, Attems was very keen on holding priests' meetings or conferences to ensure the improvement of moral life, mutual closeness and finding solutions to common problems priests found themselves faced with in their everyday life. Within the 18th century Archdiocese of Gorizia in Carniola there were nine monastic communities, of these six male and three female. Among the monasteries two were Franciscan, three Capuchin, and one Cistercian, while the convents consisted of two Clarisses' and one Dominican. The Teutonic Order also needs to be mentioned which ruled over the parishes in Bela krajina (Črnomelj, Metlika, Podzemelj, Semič, and Vinica), and the Sovereign Military Order of Malta with their parish of Komenda. From the above-mentioned 982 priests working in Carniola, 94 were monks (just under 10% of all). This number involves those monks who were active in parishes or can be in some way or another found in archival sources; but it does not include all the monks living in monasteries in Carniola. From the Middle Ages onwards monasteries in Carniola had had incorporated several parishes. Most frequently, the reason for this incorporation was to improve the financial situation of the monastery. The most parishes were incorporated to the Cistercians in Stična, then to the Cistercians in Kostanjevica, followed by the Carthusians in Bistra. Parishes of the Teutonic Order and the Sovereign Military Order of Malta are mentioned above. From the female religious orders, the Dominicans in Velesovo were the only ones with incorporated parishes. Parishes incorporated by monasteries were frequently headed by friars as vicars since the actual priest was often the superior of the monastery. Nevertheless, there were examples when monastery parishes were led by secular priests, e.g. the ones incorporated by Bistra. Incorporated parishes could prove to be problematic upon the pastoral visitations of Archbishop Attems, yet mostly everything ran smoothly since he maintained good relations with the heads of the monasteries. There was practically no claiming of exemption. Attems visited the monasteries in Carniola several times during his time as archbishop. On these occasions, he talked to the monks and nuns, presented candidates with clerical orders in monastery churches, was present when novitiates received their religious habit, dedicated churches, and he found peace behind the monastery walls to rest after his tiring journeys across the land. Generally, the life of monks and nuns was exemplary and there were few transgressions from the monastery rules. In the 18th century, the state grew increasingly less inclined towards monasticism and therefore tightened the regulations concerning monastic life. This area started to be limited by predecessors of Maria Theresa, she proclaimed some crucial decrees in the 1870s, while the peak was reached in 1880s when a series of monasteries was abolished. Maria Theresa prescribed the minimal age for acceptance to the monastery (24), the amount of »dowry«, set the rules for the election of new superiors, and the maximum number of monks in an individual monastery, she abolished monastery prisons, monks were prohibited from dealing with monetary affairs etc. All these measures paved the way for the later reforms of Joseph II. Archbishop Attems performed several pastoral visitations of parishes and vicariates subordinate to him. His attention was primarily focused on believers, he dealt with buildings and material circumstances in passing. A similar form of visitational records was also used by the bishop of Ljubljana, Karel Janez Count Herberstein, hence we tried to compare the questionnaires of both. They are particularly interesting because both dioceses were mutually intertwined regarding their territories and the priests of one diocese also worked in the other. Visitational records as such enable an insight regarding the time of Attems' pastoral visits to the parishes and vicariates of Carniola, they reveal the patronages of churches in Carniola, brotherhoods functioning there, they enable an insight into the supply of necessary liturgical and church equipment, and the composition and quality of it. We can say that the situation in the Church in Carniola was generally not much different from anywhere else in the monarchy. The Church was caught in the middle of affairs in Vienna and Rome. Archbishop Attems had friends in both capitals and was also a good friend of Maria Theresa. As a follower of the reform streams of the 18th century he was more inclined towards the Viennese than Roman policies. In Gorizia, he gathered a team of like-minded people who helped him run the enormous archdiocese. He was a good friend of the abbots in Stična and Kostanjevica and several other priests with whom he exchanged letters and opinions. His openness and friendship tore down many obstacles he could have stumbled upon as the archbishop on his pastoral visits of parishes. Attems, in a similar way to his contemporaries all over Europe, tried to enforce the conclusions of the Council of Trent, especially the ones regarding the education of priests (and believers), the administering of sacraments, and care for the liturgy. When he established the seminary in Gorizia he gained the possibility of controlling the education of future clergy, and he gained an insight into the potential of future associates. Despite the fact that priests with academic titles were scarce, he made sure that important parishes were always headed by appropriately educated priests (Krško, Stara Loka, Kamnik etc.). This work, created on the basis of almost ten years of research in Slovenian and foreign archives and supplemented with data from the relevant literature, strives to contribute to the progress of research of the long-neglected church history of the Slovenian territory, to which the history of the Archdiocese of Gorizia with its Archbishop Karel Mihael Count Attems certainly belongs. The analysis of the material has revealed that the Archdiocese of Gorizia left an indelible mark in Carniola during the 25 years when Attems was its head. Some of his measures in the Church in Slovenia are still in force today (e.g. the new pastoral outposts established in his time). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
September 1750 an. B. in Freudenthal. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
[ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
Monografija predstavlja cerkvenopolitične, teritorialne in pastoralne razsežnosti goriške nadškofije na Kranjskem v obdobju apostolskega vikarja in prvega goriškega nadškofa Karla Mihaela grofa Attemsa. Leta 1754 so morali izvesti prvo uradno štetje prebivalstva, razglašati in uresničevati so morali državne in cerkvene odloke, plačevati redne in izredne davke itd. V verskem življenju so pomembno vlogo igrale t. i. pobožne ustanove, s katerimi so hoteli sebi ter svojim živim in mrtvim sorodnikom zagotoviti dušni mir in blagor v onstranstvu. Rojeni so bili v 144 župnijah, največ v ljubljanski šempetrski in novomeški župniji, nekaj manj pa v župnijah Vipava in Stara Loka. Posamezni duhovniki so seveda izstopali z nasprotnim. Bili so inovativni in posebej prizadevni v dušnem pastirstvu (npr. Peter Pavel Glavar). Zanimiva sta še posebej zato, ker sta bili obe škofiji med seboj ozemeljsko prepleteni, poleg tega so duhovniki ene škofije službovali v drugi škofiji. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
