In the territory between the rivers Eo and Navia, to the West of Asturias, there is a legend, called The Exiled, based on a common theme, the murder of a priest by a nobleman, and with scarce but testimonial literary tradition, that has survived for almost five centuries in different variants which place the plot at different locations within the same geographical area: in Prelo (Bual), halfway the course of the river Navia, in OUmares (Santalla d'Oscos), among others. In this paper we will explore the origin of the legend, so far unknown, and now related to an incident that took place on 26th September in 1564, in the tower house in Pezós, which was owned by the nobleman Alvar Díez de Ron y Quirós, the eldest-son of that family name. On that date Alonso Cuervo, a gentleman from the nearby village Valledor who acted as a priest in the local parishes of Grandas and Trabada, was murdered, after having some confrontations with the nobleman. His corpse appeared a few days later, buried very close to the river in Cecos, Ibias, which was under the jurisdiction of the nobleman. In this paper details about the incident will be revealed now, through the analysis of a legal sentence from the second half of the sixteenth century, which supplies documentary evidence about the historical origin of the legend. At the same time, it will offer an overview of modes of behaviour of the Asturian nobility at that time and earlier periods, paying particular attention to violence as a key instrument of empowerment among the upper classes. The efforts made by the monarchy since the time of the Catholic King and Queen to control these violent behaviours were continuous, however, it was not until the end of the sixteenth century that the Principality of Asturias could be considered pacified. Indeed, the murder of a priest challenged the political strategy of consolidation of power structures and the public prerogatives that were gradually vanishing until the modern State.
