The poet group "Svetimi" ("Strangers") came to the Lithuanian poetry in the 1990s and initiated a new period in it. The manifest, which was published in the collection and expressed a new creative position of the authors, declared the rejection of any former literary traditions, the negation of literary authorities, and the aspiration to a new and different "strangeness", which in fact suggested a deeper consolidation of post-modernist esthetics in literature. The poetic programme of "Strangers" was based on the manifestation of dehumanism, and this revealed a new positioning of the self in the context of the Lithuanian poetry. Negativism is not a motif or a sign in the collection; this is a dominant tendency as the group rejected any ethical and moral taboos, and used the images of brutal sexuality, violence, and the destruction of an individual and culture in their poetry. Their poetry destroys the belief in the former epistemes of the traditional culture: home, land, the mother, the relatives, childhood are not related to a traditionally safe space or a comforting shelter. Rather, they inspire negative feelings as they are the memories which frustrate the individual. In poetry, this is expressed by a variety of profane language. These features demonstrate the emergence of a new poetic world view and its construction. A typical feature of the poetic texts in the collection "Strangers" is pervasive social negativism (heavy drinking, slaughter, violence, images of prisons) which help establishing the categories of 'nothing' and 'nowhere' important for the authors; these categories also expressed non-existence, disappearance, and pain. In the poems by Valdas Gedgaudas, Evaldas Valančiauskas, Evaldas Ignatavicius and other poets, a traditional understanding of beauty is replaced by the images of brutality and violence (blood, death, killers), desacralised views of the sensuality of physical acts, which purposefully hide the symbols of classical culture. Poetry "heroes" are the representatives of marginal spaces, outsiders, and outcasts. The sinfulness of life is emphasized, especially focusing on the major sins: incest, depravity, jealousy, or the decline of humanity; they are implied as natural manifestations of being, emphasizing any spiritual support as life mockery. In all creation by "Strangers", the spiritual emptiness is reflected, spiritual support and landmarks disappear, and the world depicted has lost its previous essence and does not have a clear direction. The view of an artist is preserved, but this is not seeing the world in an eternal process and change. Destruction and demonic images dominate in the collection (monsters, devils, and witches), which change the usual imagery of Lithuanian poetry. This creates an unusual world view, in the centre of which there is a person who is suffering but being ironic about this. These features demonstrate that "Strangers" is the darkest poetry collection in Lithuanian literature so far. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
