The article provides the views of the author regarding relations between France and the United States. Diplomats from the two countries are still waging war at the United Nations over the future of Iraq. Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld reportedly even refuses to cross the street in Dupont Circle to dine with his neighbor, France's ambassador to the United States, despite repeated invitations from the Frenchman. In fact, around the world, the United States and France are cooperating much more closely in the war on terrorism than one might think; France's Foreign Legion has for decades been stationed in some of the world's roughest neighborhoods and has gained a great deal of counterterrorism experience. During the Iraq war, the French suspended all joint military exercises with the Americans in Djibouti.
