The use of Finnish language in the Duodecim journal of 1885 does not radically differ from the written language of that time, at least from that used in factual prose. Certain features of spelling, conjugation and wording stand out to the modern reader. In addition, the sentences are longer and their structures more complicated as compared with present-day texts. The influence of Germanic languages is seen especially in the word order. As to the standard language vocabulary, the language of the annual volume 1885 sounds, however, familiar. Large differences between authors are not noted, indicating an active editorial work.
