The mineralogical and chemical compositions of four samples of petrified wood, collected at Pariaguán (Anzoátegui, state, Venezuela) and associated with the Mesa Formation (Pleistocene), were examined by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and electron probe microanalysis (EPMA), respectively. Macroscopic inspection of the samples revealed the presence of typical elements of wood, such as vessels, fibrous tissue, and radial and axial parenchyma tissues; featured in well-replicated patterns. Anatomical features identified in silicified wood debris suggest that the samples belong to the Maclura Nutt genus, and either the M. tinctoria or the M. brasiliensis species, or both. All the samples were found to consist of one or more of the following silica forms: quartz, opal, and chalcedony. The analysis determined the original structures of wood and gave important indications about the petrification processes by silica minerals. The result suggests that silicification occurred through an impregnation mechanism where wood fragments were buried quickly under anoxic conditions, which inhibited the decomposition of organic matter and favored the preservation of original structures. These conditions may have been facilitated in the fluvio-deltaic and paludal sedimentation paleoenvironments, characteristic of the Mesa Formation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
[ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
