An essay is presented on using film maker Ken Burn's documentary film "The Civil War" in high school history classes. The author analyzes the film's treatment of General Robert E. Lee's decision to join the Confederate Army. He also examines Burn's treatment of U.S. President Abraham Lincoln's views on slavery and his role in the 1862 Preliminary Emancipation Proclamation. Themes of memory and interpretation are analyzed.
