Sebald's poetics of description are a modern version of the rules of ekphrasis, the genre of describing pictures in classical poetics. It is founded in Austerlitz' declaration of "being-out-of time" within the flow of narration, in favour of duration und preservation of memory: evidence by perception through the senses, samples of perceiving reality, evoking presence in representation, strategies of spacing against the past tense of the novel's historical construction of time. Extensive and excessive descriptions generate what Roland Barthes called "the existential density of duration" which opens the text for visions and imaginations. Sebald's distinctive attitude of describing reality within narration brings about a particular mood of expressing melancholy and entropy, as a very personal invitation to contemporary readers who - like Sebald's narrators - have grown weary of ideologically constructed representations of history.
