In this article the author considers the issue of nationalism in Nigerian art. The author disputes the notion that nationalism became an element in Nigerian art in the 1950s, and traces the development of that theme to the period before the First World War when Nigeria was still a colony of Great Britain. Among other issues he names Aina Onabolu and Ben Enwonwu as the primary champions of early Nigerian modern art and examines the influence of the Zaria art society that flourished in Nigeria in the 1950s and 1960s.
