The article examines the factors that enable queen bees to regulate the behavior of their offspring and highlights steps that have been made towards understanding the cellular and molecular mechanisms that underlie associative olfactory learning in insects. Queen bees depend on workers to feed and groom them. Workers also distribute queen mandibular pheromones (QMP) throughout the colony. The exposure of the colony to QMP may be advantageous to the queen to prevent bees from being able to associate her with any negative effects of her pheromone.
