This article reports on a cohort study of the risk of aggressive periodontitis in teenage carriers of the JP2 clone of Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans in Morocco. Periodontitis in its aggressive form can leave sufferers toothless by the age of 20 and although the exact underlying mechanism that supports the disease is not known, the JP2 clone of the Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans is thought to be a possible cause of the disease in young people living in north and west Africa. The study looked at 700 teenagers from schools in Morocco who were classified according to their actinomycetemcomitans carrier status. Those who carried the JP2 clone had a significantly higher risk of the disease as compared to those who carried the non-JP2 clones.
