The article examines aspects of cultural identity, particularly the notion that ethnic groups in South Africa inhabit a type of diaspora, in South African literature. The subject is analyzed from a postcolonial perspective. National identity is examined as it appears in a number of books by South Africans including "Another Country," by Karel Schoeman, "The Cry of Winnie Mandela," by Njabulo S. Nedebele and "The Pickup," by Nadine Gordimer.
