Abstract: Fast-flow reactor study of the thermal decomposition of the octamethylcyclosiloxane (D4). The temperature-dependent kinetics of octamethylcyclosiloxane decomposition has been determined by fast-flow reactor molecular beam sampling. The rate constant writes over the temperature range 1058–1197K. Experimental gas phase products have been analysed: results suggest that transannular elimination of D1 is the main process of D4 decomposition and that the mechanism outlined by Davidson et al. is to be extended to the decomposition of D5 into D3 and D2, and to the steps of methane formation in order to explain the experimental results at higher degrees of conversion.
