The article focuses on the effects of the queen mandibular pheromone (QMP), produced by queen bees, to the dopaminergic functions of worker bees. It claims that researchers found a decrease in the messenger ribonucleic acid (mRNA) content of newly emerged bees which are exposed to QMP for 2 days. Similar responses from those evoked by dopamine are likewise produced by homovanillyl alcohol, a component of QMP. It adds that the mixture of HVA in QMP may directly influence dopamine receptors in the nervous system of bees, thus lessening the expression of dopamine receptors.
