The Azerbaijan Democratic Republic (ADR) stands as an important chapter in the turbulent history of the South Caucasus region. Emerging after the First World War and the 1917 Russian Revolution, the ADR represented a ray of hope for the Azerbaijani people who aspired to establish an independent and democratic state. Existing from 1918 to 1920, this newly-formed republic faced numerous challenges, with one of the most significant being the need for agrarian reforms. The ADR's willingness to address such issues during a period of instability demonstrated the state's ambition to develop in all areas. As the Ottoman Empire and the Russian Empire disintegrated, the ADR seized a brief opportunity to determine its fate. Geographically situated in the South Caucasus, it was bordered by the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic to the north and the newly formed Armenian Democratic Republic to the west. This geographical position presented both advantages and vulnerabilities, as the ADR had to contend with external pressures from neighboring states. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
