One of the reasons why the West remained so long ignorant of the war on Russia's home front was arguably - as the authors here argue (p. 8) - the Cold War that followed the Allied Victory. Indeed, as the Cold War developed, memories of the crucial role played by Russia in the defeat of Hitler rapidly faded as Communist Russia replaced Nazi Germany as public enemy number 1. Less well known, at least to readers in the West, is the contribution to that victory by the civilian population of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR), or what the authors of this excellent book call "the Soviet home front".
